Online Job Scams:

Job seekers who use online job search web sites must be careful to avoid a type of job scam.

Online job scams involve a con artist who pretends to be an employer. The con artist uses a job ad to lure an unsuspecting job seeker, or they may use information from a resume they have found online. Such con artists can be quite convincing, and may even use company names and corporate logos to convince victims that they are legitimate employers.

There are many variations of online job scams. Following is very simple tip that will go far to protect you from falling victim. Again, this scam can be quite clever and refined.

Unemployment..

Being unemployed is bad enough. But job seekers have a new worry: falling victim to criminals and con artists prowling Internet job-posting services.

Online recruiting sites such as Friendster and other free job sites have grown from job-posting boards into Web sites hosting millions of résumés and thousands of jobs. Unfortunately, crooks have also discovered online recruiting, and they’ve been busily devising new schemes to exploit job seekers.

Most scams take one of two forms: either a fraudulent offer of placement assistance or identity theft by someone posing as an employer to gain a job applicant’s personal data.Swindlers are using the Internet to target millions.

Fraudulent Jobs....

One of the most prevalent scams is a cyber-twist on an old con: the fraudulent job-placement scheme. Job hunters who have publicly posted their résumés receive spam e-mail touting phony employment  opportunities. The object is to get the victim to pay a big fee, sometimes thousands of pesos, for job-placement assistance. But the "job openings," often business positions, are nonexistent or can be viewed free in classified ads or online job boards.

Business-opportunity pitches are often illegal pyramid schemes, complete fiction, or thinly disguised multilevel-marketing programs requiring job hunters to buy something. Among the most common "opportunities": direct hiring,or "qualified" applicants will start immediately.

Common Frauds

It can be expensive to be unaware of the most common internet fraud activities.

Job offer scam

Fraudsters send unsolicited emails, put job offers on legitimate internet recruitment sites, or internet chat rooms, looking to recruit job applicants.

Remain vigilant, remember if it sounds like money for nothing, its almost certainly bogus. You should also check for grammatical and spelling errors within the emails or any correspondence received, the fraudsters often miss out key words, or use unusual salutations.

Who will pay me?

Legitimate  employers should be willing and able to answer a variety of questions about their programs. Here are some questions this poster suggests you ask:

    * What tasks will I have to perform? (Ask the "employer" to list every step of the job.)

    * Will I be paid a salary, or will my pay be based on commission?(OR WILL I BE THE ONE TO PAY YOU?)

    * Who will pay me?

    * When will I get my first paycheck?

Finally, if the "employer" passes all these tests but you still feel a bit queasy about the offer, trust your gut and run the other way.

Where the Scams Are

Job seekers would be wise to remember the expression, "dirty money always seeks the path of least resistance," as they conduct their searches in cyberspace, a low-friction employment and personal information marketplace.

Where the Scams Are

Job seekers must be familiar with the Internet media scammers most frequently use to snare accomplices and victims. Some scam pitches appear as job-board postings. Other scammers send their intended victims an unsolicited, often grammatically wobbly email.Sometimes scammers use a technique called spoofing. This scam can make an email containing a link to a fraudulent posting look like it comes from a well-known job site.

STAY CLEAR OF THIS ADDRESS

Whether you're looking for that first job, been unemployed or just want to trade up, job hunting can be extremely stressful. But job seekers now have an added worry: wondering whether that job posting is fake or whether any personal information they give out will be exploited.

Online job boards have taken off in recent years.
That has created big opportunities for con artists to prey on applicants, some desperate to find anything.

These scam artists work in two different ways: They either place a fraudulent job listing on a site. There are tons of jobs out there, and they all sound so legitimate.
And if you are looking for a job, you don't think there is going to be fraudulent companies advertising on reputable sites.

But job seekers also need to do their part by being cautious about who they contact and what type of personal information they give out, even when using established sites.

Haven't we heard all this before?

You may well have heard of the string of "TEKTITE"-based cons that almost anyone with a Friendster account is likely to have seen.

Everyone thinks they know there's no such thing as a free lunch.

But con artists  trade on the fact that that there's always a proportion of people who think that they alone can spot the one genuine opportunity among the millions of rip-offs.

The methods used by these tricksters can be very convincing to unsuspecting consumers.

So what can you do to avoid it?

The simple answer remains the same with all internet scams.

If it sounds like money for nothing, it's almost certainly bogus.
